This is for you if

Nothing you do ever feels good enough, even when everyone else is impressed.
You replay mistakes over and over, long after everyone else has forgotten them.
You put things off, because if you can’t do it perfectly, why start?
You can’t switch off until everything’s done (and it’s never all done).
The voice in your head is harsher to you than you’d ever be to a friend.
You feel anxious about being judged, getting it wrong or letting people down.

Perfectionism and anxiety

Perfectionism isn’t a personality trait. It’s a safety strategy.

Somewhere along the way, your brain learnt that getting things right meant staying safe: being accepted, approved of and out of trouble. So that harsh inner voice isn’t trying to hurt you. It’s trying to protect you. The problem is, it keeps your nervous system on high alert, always scanning for what could go wrong. That’s why perfectionism and anxiety so often go hand in hand.

Your critic is a protector

It thinks being hard on yourself will stop you failing, being judged or letting people down.

It keeps you on high alert

Constantly checking, overthinking and bracing for mistakes keeps your body in threat mode.

It’s learnt, so it can be unlearnt

With repetition, your brain can learn that you’re safe without having to be perfect.

So what is hypnotherapy?

Why hypnosis works on your inner critic. It’s not about thinking harder.

You can know you’re being too hard on yourself and still not be able to stop. That’s because your inner critic runs automatically, below conscious thought, which is why reasoning with it or being told to “just be kinder to yourself” often isn’t enough. Hypnosis lets the analysing mind step back, so you can work directly with the subconscious and give your nervous system a regular experience of calm. Everyone responds differently.

Deeply relaxed, not asleep

A calm, focused state, a bit like getting lost in a good book. You’re aware the whole time.

You stay in control

You can open your eyes whenever you like. Nobody can make you do anything you don’t want to.

Works below the thinking mind

Self-criticism runs automatically. Hypnosis speaks to the subconscious, where those patterns live.

Meet your guide

Hi, I’m Katie – your therapist!

Clinical Hypnotherapist, EFT Practitioner and NLP Master Practitioner. Originally from Australia, now based in Edinburgh.

My own story with this work started in my mid-20s, when anxiety and low self-worth were ruling my life. Talking therapy helped me understand what was happening but it was subconscious work that actually changed how I was feeling.

I now help people do the same – get out of survival mode, calm their nervous systems and quieten their mind so they feel in control of their lives again.
