34. Choosing better partners: Attachment, self-respect and nervous system patterns in dating

Ever found yourself staying with someone who keeps hurting you simply because your feelings for them are so strong?

In this episode, we're diving into one of the biggest patterns I see in therapy: why we ignore red flags, stay in relationships that chip away at our self-worth and struggle to walk away from people we know aren't treating us well.

Using some of the dynamics we've seen play out on this year's Love Island, we'll explore why attraction and attachment can sometimes override our self-respect and why that doesn't mean you're weak or "bad at relationships."

We'll also talk about why having feelings for someone isn't the problem. The real problem is when those feelings become stronger than your boundaries, your self-trust and your self-respect.

In this episode, we'll cover:

  • Why it's completely normal to still have feelings for someone who has hurt you.
  • Why so many people ignore red flags at the beginning of relationships.
  • How inconsistency, breadcrumbing and dishonesty often predict what's to come.
  • The psychology behind why it's so difficult to walk away.
  • Why self-respect isn't about having no feelings, it's about making decisions that honour your worth.
  • The attachment patterns that keep us stuck in unhealthy relationship dynamics.
  • How to build the self-trust and self-respect needed to leave relationships that are no longer serving you.
